The naturalization civics test — what USCIS actually says

Which version of the civics test will I take?

It is decided by your filing date, not your interview date. USCIS administers the 2008 civics test to applicants who filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025, and the 2025 civics test to those who filed on or after that date. The change implements Executive Order 14161; the 2025 test is based on the 2020 test with some changes to how it is administered.

How many questions are asked, and how many do I need right?

2008 test: the officer asks up to 10 questions from the list of 100, and you need 6 correct. You fail once you get 5 wrong. 2025 test: 20 questions from the list of 128, and you need 12 correct. You fail once you get 9 wrong. In both, the officer stops as soon as the result is decided — so the interview can end after 6 questions.

It is an oral test — why practise with multiple choice?

Because the recall is the hard part, not the format. A USCIS officer asks the question out loud and you answer out loud; there are no options to pick from. Our flashcard mode matches that: the question comes up, you answer in your head or aloud, then reveal the official answer and mark yourself. Use the multiple-choice mode early on to learn the material and flashcards once you are close to the interview.

I am 65 or older — is there an easier version?

Yes. If you are 65 or older and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 or more years, USCIS asks 10 questions from a specially selected bank of 20, taken from either the 2008 or the 2025 test. Those 20 are marked with an asterisk in the official lists. You may also take the test in the language of your choice.

Some answers change over time. How do I know mine are current?

USCIS warns that answers about elected and appointed officials change, and that you must answer with whoever holds the office at the time of your interview — the Speaker of the House, your senators, your governor, the number of Supreme Court justices. We keep those questions as flashcards with the official placeholder wording rather than freezing a name that will go stale. Check the USCIS Civics Test Updates page before your interview.

Is the civics test the whole naturalization test?

No. There is also an English test. You read one of three sentences aloud, write one of three sentences, and your ability to speak and understand English is judged by the officer over the course of the N-400 interview itself. This site drills the civics portion only.
