About the 2008 civics test

Who takes the 2008 version of the civics test?

Applicants who filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025 take the 2008 civics test. There are 100 possible questions; at your interview a USCIS officer asks up to 10, and you must answer 6 correctly to pass.

Are these the real USCIS questions?

Yes. All 100 questions and their answers come directly from the official USCIS "100 Civics Questions and Answers (2008 version)" list — a U.S. government document in the public domain. We do not rewrite or invent questions.

Is the real test oral or multiple choice?

The interview is oral: a USCIS officer asks the questions and you answer out loud. We use flashcards so you rehearse recalling the answer from memory and then check yourself — closer to the real format than multiple choice.

Does it cost anything or need an account?

It is completely free and no signup is required. Sign in only if you want to save your history and see which topics you miss most.

Why do some answers say "answers will vary" or point to uscis.gov?

Questions about current officials — like your U.S. Senators, U.S. Representative, or the President — change over time, so USCIS directs applicants to official up-to-date resources. We show the official wording and let you self-check.
